Participants have been asked to attempt to stay within a social assistance benefits’ budget. The challenger’s budget of $63 for five days includes all food and drink, entertainment, some personal supplies and transportation costs. Day 5

Today is our last day. I didn't have breakfast. My challenge card says that I burnt my dinner and I have nothing to eat. Lucky for me, I still have extra eggs left and spaghetti from last night so I will be able to eat that. If I didn't have anything left I would have to think about going out to find something free at a shelter or church. If that wasn't an option I would have to go without.

Day 4

No breakfast today. My challenge said that I have no money for my kid's valentines cards to bring to school. That was hard to take. I decided though that if that was the case I would encourage them to make homemade cards for their friends. I brought a wrap for lunch and made spaghetti for dinner. It was a busy day yesterday with parent meetings and school council - hence why I am posting a day late!

Day 3

My challenge today was that all forms of electronics have vanished from my life. This was extremely difficult because of my job. Even being able to do this post is breaking my challenge! I would be okay though to go back to the 'old days' of CBC radio.

I haven't eaten today - looking forward to my Tuna wraps or maybe I will make some scrambled egg wraps to change it up. This challenge has caused me to pause and reflect on all the incremental costs; such as toothpaste, toilet paper etc. All of the things I take for granted. It is clear that $63 doesn't go very far.

Day Two

Today is day two - I did have a coffee this morning and it was not in my groceries, so I will deduct $1.00 from my budget to cover that. My challenge for the day today is that I do not have socks!
I didn't have breakfast today - which is normal for me during the week. I am looking forward to my tuna wraps later today. My balance to carry me through this week is $36.58!!

Day One

Today I did my grocery shopping, I was able to get tuna, wraps, eggs, pasta and sauce all for $15 and then $3.00 for gas! I know that protein is important for me so I loaded up on those things. I did my shopping at Walmart so didn't get any fresh fruits or vegetables but I still have money left so I can stop to grab a few things if I need during this week. I didn't eat breakfast or lunch - but had two tuna wraps for dinner. I also had Hockey which when broken down costs me $4.25 and then $3.00 for the gas. When I got home from hockey I was hungry but I just went to bed.

My challenge for the day was that my vehicle didn't work so I had to find out how much it would cost me for a taxi from my house to work. It was going to be around $15!! The same amount as my food for the week in one ride to work. Needless to say if this was the truth I would have to either walk or try to get a ride from someone that I work with.
